Clay County Parks

History of Spanish Colony of St. Augustine

Ranger guided tours are offered for all ages and last about 50 minutes with a visit to the fort, including the boat trip. Group size is limited to 35 people, including students and adults. Minimum of 15 people for group tours. After the tour, groups may want to explore the half mile nature trail or have lunch in the picnic area. With advance notice, curriculum packets are available with teacher-led activities on nature and/or history. No cost at this time, but donations are accepted.

American History

This museum is housed in a one-room school dating from the late 1800's and is located on the Hunter-Douglas Park. Through museum tour, oral history discussion, artifacts (ie. homemade toys, stove), and hands-on activities, students in 3rd grade and up will learn about the way of life of the Black community in Clay County in the late 1800s and beyond. Through photographs and discussion, students will also follow the journey of these early pioneering families through to their present successes. "The Mime Behind the Mask": In an innovative blend of European style clowning, illusionary technique, and stand-up comedy, Tom presents mime as an accessibly and vital art form. He acts out silent stories that provoke thought, laughter, and feeling. Audience participation and improvisation bring excitement, while magic, masks and circus skills help teach the values of creativity and perseverance.
"Character that Counts": This performance / teaching program was developed in part with MACAD (Metropolitan Atlanta Council on Alcohol & Drugs) to use creative expression to stop at-risk behavior in children. Using mime, drama, humor, and verbal discussion Dr. Tom and the audience examine how good character promotes standards of moral obligation which help young people determine the difference between right and wrong. The program touches on values such as honesty, self discipline and perseverance.
"Information Please": In his newest show Dr. Tom uses all his skills and audience participation (with students and teachers) to illustrate how important and wonderful reading and writing can be. He starts this performance demonstrating how he got started in the performing arts; by going to his local library and getting a book on clowning so he could work with his magician friend.
Theatre Ministry: Presentations can be used in a strictly theatrical format or in combination of personal testimony and mime sketches. Presentations can be used in the following ways: Worship Services; Banquets; Children & Family Programs; Retreats; Wednesday Night Programs; Mime / Clown Workshops
One Day Residency: One day residencies consist of 1 to 2 performances in the morning, followed by as many workshops as possible for the duration of the day. Workshops are for grades 3 - 5 and range from 15 to 45 minutes. The workshop may include mime technique, improv games, theater games, and circus skills (plate spinning & balloon balancing). The personal achievements of the students offer them a great sense of success as well as joy and delight. The student experiences Self-Discipline, Self-Confidence, and Creative Thinking.
"One Week Residency: One week residencies are unique in the fact that they culminate with students performing in the Dr. Tom Show. Dr. Tom works with either 4th or 5th grades (or a combination of both) for four days; five workshops a day for 45 - 50 minutes each. The workshop may include mime technique, improv games, theater games, circus skills (plate spinning & balloon balancing). The students experience Team work, Self-Discipline, Self-Confidence, Creative Thinking, Coordination, and Trust for themselves and each other. On the final day after a morning of rehearsal, Dr. Tom's troupe of 25 will be ready to step on stage. Using mime, circus skills, and their own talents such as gymnastics & dance they create a very special show. While working with Dr. Tom the students learn: 1. How to Produce a Show; 2. Theatrical Timing; 3. Stage Presence; 4. Problem Solving; 5. Self-Esteem; 6. How to Create Energy on Stage; and 7. Risk Taking."

GTM Research Reserve Environmental Education Center offers guided programs for 4th grade, high school groups and and college as well as self-guided programs that involve scavenger hunts and hiking trails guides for teachers of students in 2nd grade and up. JaxParks Swim Lessons

Activities range from swim lessons for all ages to aqua aerobics to family swim month. Keep reading for all the exciting details.

Aqua Babies - Aqua Babies is a water acclimation class specially designed for infants age 6 to 36 months. The program's fun, safe environment will allow participants to become more comfortable in and around water. Participants will work in small groups of 10 per each instructor. A parent is required to accompany his/her child in the water.
Aqua Babies is offered at the Cecil Aquatics Center only.

Aqua Tot Program - Aqua Tots is a water acclimation class for children ages 2 1/2 - 5. Toddlers will have the opportunity to learn basic aquatic skills in a fun and safe environment. Parents must accompany the children. All Aqua Tots classes have one instructor per five participants. The classes are offered at select locations.

Youth Swim Lessons - Youth Swim Lessons are for children ages 5 to 12. Children are placed in classes based on their skill level. Activities range from basic aquatic acclimation to learning competitive swimming strokes. The learn-to-swim program maintains one instructor for every 10 participants.
Youth swim lessons are offered during the summer months at select pool locations and year-round at the Cecil Aquatics Center.

Kids Kampus Field Trips

Kids Kampus offers an outdoor playground that has a spash park in the summer, nature trail, and picnic pavillians. Take your class to the playground, make a picnic pavillion reservation, or schedule a field trip. All offerings are free.

Kids Kampus' free educational field trips support the Sunshine State Standards to all organized public and private elementary schools. Creepy Crawly Things (1st - 3rd Grades): Do worms have tongues? How do bugs see? Your students will be able to answer all of these questions once they embark on the insect safari that is part of this cool adventure into a bug's world.

Water Cycle Workshop (2nd - 4th Grades): In this dynamic physical study of the water cycle, students will engage in several activities, including traveling through it as a drop of water and discovering the St. Johns River watershed.

Bubblocity (1st - 5th Grades): Learn about scientific principles such as surface tension and the visible light spectrum and create art work through the use of bubbles.

Do You See What Eye See (1st - 5th Grades): Seeing isn't always believing; students will learn in this dynamic program of study on how the human eye works, and how our eyes can be tricked to see things that may not be present.

Here Comes the Sun (2nd - 5th Grades): Students will cruise through this solar powered learning experience, this is a great companion to solar system studies.

It's In the Air (3rd - 5th Grades): Students will enjoy a live, interactive performance that will help them understand Bernoulli's Principle.

Emergency Preparedness - Special Needs

The Duval County Emergency Preparedness Division maintains a registry of clients who have been identified as persons with Special Medical Needs. These individuals require assistance during evacuations and sheltering.

A person qualifying for special needs is predominantly someone who is medically dependent on electricity (i.e. electricity needed for life supporting equipment). This may also include a person with regular need for assistance with medications and/or observation, dementia, chronic conditions that require assistance and persons with contagious health conditions that require minimal precautions or isolation (rare in shelter).

Any person that meets the above criteria and plans to use a public shelter during an evacuation should register by filling out the form (found here) or by contacting the Emergency Preparedness Office by phone (904-630-2472).

Levels:
T-Ball (ages 5-7) - All aspects of the field and the rules are adjusted to allow your child to develop the skills and fundamentals of baseball in an instructional way that they will thoroughly enjoy.
Pitching Machine (age 8) - Your child is moved to rules closer to regular baseball rules, with a few exceptions to keep things fun. A pitching machine is used to transition your child from soft toss T-Ball pitching to real pitching.
Kid Pitch (ages 9 & 10) - This level is your child's first real taste of regular baseball where 9 and 10 year olds compete. By now your child has been prepared to safely use the skills they have developed to step up to the plate and bat a real pitch, run and steal bases. Offensive and defensive play further develops your child's baseball skills.
Kid Pitch (ages 11 & 12) - The top level of competitive baseball at MAA. Your young athlete will compete at an impressive level of play with few errors and exciting games.

YMCA flag football program offers the child a chance to learn the fundamentals of football: passing, receiving and running in a non-competitive atmosphere. Ages 5-14. Each of our city pools offers a recreational swim team during the summer. Practices begin Monday, June 9, and are from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday. Each team will schedule meets with other area pools on Saturday mornings. The season will culminate with a District meet and the City Championship in mid-July. There is no cost for this program.

Kaleidoscope School Performances

A combined repertoire of over two hundred stories. Drawn from many cultures and areas of the world, these traditional tales touch on a wide variety of subjects. Our performances always feature a kaleidoscope of storytelling techniques, including tandem telling, puppet partners, song, poetry, props, creative drama and audience participation. To add to the educational benefits of the storytelling presentations, each school program comes with a teacher activity packet for classroom use. Offering eight pre-assembled Kaleidoscope programs designed for schools, but let us know if you have a different theme you would like us to work with. Special Needs Soccer

TOPS Soccer is a CAA program designed to bring soccer to children with special needs who are ages 6-21. Kids play on Sundays from 3pm-5pm and are grouped according to age. Fun and educational games and soccer drills are used to teach soccer as well as other skills. No child is turned away. Free. Practices are held in Julington Creek Plantation and are open to the public. Fall season runs Sep - early Nov and Spring season runs March - May.

Mothers and More Jacksonville Chapter

Children of all ages are welcome. However, most fall somewhere between infancy and late elementary school age. The group accepts members from anywhere in the Jacksonville Metro area. Mothers and More Jacksonville Chapter is a local chapter of a national, not-for-profit organization supporting mothers who have altered their careers to raise their children. The group believes that having time away from child rearing responsibilities is important for moms, and offers a variety of activities both with and without children. The group offers age-based playgroups, Mom and Tot field trips, monthly social meetings for moms, moms night out activities, a book club, family picnics, and more. There are usually 2-3 activities per week, as well as age-based playgroups that meet weekly. In addition, adult monthly social meetings are held at 7pm on the 1st Thursday of each month in Classroom B at Baptist Beaches Hospital. Meetings are open to visitors, and nursing infants are welcome as well. To remain active, members must keep their annual dues current ($45/year). There are no activity requirements. Visitors are welcome to attend two meetings before making the decision to join.
